Host School’s Media Center Setting

The host public school is located in a small town and is the only primary school within the county. It has been used by the public since 1989. There is also an elementary, middle, and high school associated with the county’s school system. This particular school is responsible for educating students from kindergarten to second grade. A state-funded pre-kindergarten program also uses this facility.

There are approximately 845 students that use this primary school on a daily basis. Upon further analysis, there are five pre-kindergarten classrooms, ten kindergarten classrooms, nine 1st grade classrooms, and ten 2nd grade classrooms. There is also a self-contained special education classroom consisting of seven students. Each regular education classroom appropriately contains twenty to twenty-two students.

Over half of the school population is considered to be “economically disadvantaged.” 60% of the school is of a Caucasian race, while 35% are African Americans. 5% of the school’s population is considered to be Hispanic or of Asian decent.

The media center is located near the main entrance into the school building. It is also located near the school’s main office, art room, music room, and cafeteria. The classrooms are separated by grade level and are located on branches off of the main hallway. While the classrooms are not particularly close to the media center, the center itself is located in an accessible area for all students. Usually classes attend the library as a whole group during one weekly allotted time. After students become familiar with the location of the room, they are then able to visit the media center two at a time during the school day.
